Teachers...Take a Look at a NEW way to Conference!

Videos of Students in Charge Using Ipads!

If your school is moving in the ipad direction....check this out! You can be a part of the student led conference on this site! It is a great resources for student led conferences or simply why ipads/technology is so beneficial! You can tell that the kids love being in charge, and that the parents gain so much knowledge of what their child is learning.

A little more information.......

Middle school teacher, Clay Reisler, blogs about student led conferences from his classroom. This blog includes video examples from several students and their parents. Students walk their parents through their conference using ipads. Students share work samples, special apps and cites, and also current grades. Parent’s comment on how much their children know about the content they are learning and the technology surrounding it. Reisler includes the conference format that each student must cover. It is laid out nicely and very user friendly. The videos capture the benefits of student led conferences.

Generativity

                                                                        WANTED

Ways To Help “Cliff”

This week our class has showed Generativity through…

·        Sharing……as a class our goal is to listen and respect all new ideas and stories.

·        Math and Reading Games…we are open to all partners working together to solve problems and come up with solutions. We are also working on good sportsmanship when the games are over.

·        Point Success! Each group is working together as a team to earn points. Points are earned through being responsible, respectful and ready.

·        Heartwarming adjectives - We listed adjectives about our friends that make them feel good!

Specific Goals for ME…..

·        Happiness Spreads! I am making sure that I have a positive attitude and outlook on the day. This will spread throughout this class.

·        Look for the Positive side of things. Find the good and address what needs to improve. Make sure “Cliff” knows what strengths I see daily.

·        Encourage to Discourage…..If we fill the day with positive comments and energy, “Cliff” will have no time/room for negative feelings or actions in our classroom.

Praxis Reflection

Praxis Reflection

Why is teaching students to become responsible for their learning so important?

Most of us could agree that if you work hard for something, you feel a sense of accomplishment, when the task is completed. The importance of teaching each child to value what they are learning is priceless. Even in second grade level, students can be responsible for their levels of effort. They should be able to share their strengths and what they feel they could work on. I believe if we allow our students to feel like they are the ones in charge, they will put more energy and effort into each lesson. This is possible through lessons and activities that provide choices, self-editing, and reflection. Our goal as teachers is to prepare our kids for the future by giving them the tools in life to become successful. The tools, self-motivation and intrinsic value are essential to their tool box.

How do I see this teaching belief in my classroom?

This belief definitely needs to develop within my classroom. My values of expanding student led learning has grown much deeper over the past few months. Research has provided me with examples of how this approach helps students and the methods that are used to apply action. I would like to start by increasing the amount of lessons and activities which place my students in the driver’s seat. Here is a list of some ways that currently reflect this teaching belief.

·         Choices

o   Books

o   Games

o   Extensions

§  Menus

o   Projects

·         Self-Editing

o   Check-lists

o   Writers Meetings

o   Rubrics

·         Conferencing

o   Students write and share areas of strength and weakness with their parents

Backward Design and Concept Based Teaching Connections

Backward design and Concept Based Teaching Connections

The teaching models of Backwards Design and Concept Based Teaching are very similar. Their main objective is to provide students with the “why” and “how” of learning. So much of education focuses on the simple facts that do not require the learner to think. I completely agree that students gain so much more when they are expected to use and relate the information that they are learning to a bigger picture. I also believe that students are more motivated to learn if they know how to apply and use new information.

·         Both BD and CBI want the learner to dig deeper.

o   Students should be exposed deeper thinking. Teachers should not stop at just the memorization of facts that is present in the 2D model of teaching.

o   Critical thinking and analyzing information is very significant.

§  One way to use in class –  Questioning for Stories

·         Place the child in the character’s shoes, what would you have done?

·         What are some other effects that might have happened when the character did not listen to his dad?

·         A belief in building connections

o   Building connections using new knowledge and prior knowledge is important.

o   Concepts should build on one another. Students should be able to apply new information to what they have learned in the past. This shows that they have a deep understanding of what they are learning.

§  One way to use in class – Explain the “why” and “how”

·         Tell the students why we are learning each concept and how they will use it in the future. Have them explain any connections that they see.

·         An essential question

o   Students create the question in the CBI article. They research, plan and write a question that shows that they are thinking critically about the topic.

o   The BD model is also centered on an essential question. The teacher uses this question to plan and create lessons that answer that essential question.

§  One way to use in class – Have the students create their own essential question based off of what they would like to learn about the new concept.

·         Both Motivate the Learner

o   Both BD and CBI want the students to be involved.

o   They both value the thinking of the learner.  Erickson explains that the CBT model values and respects the individual by “drawing understandings from” rather than “telling understandings to.”

§  One way to use in class – Class discussions on book characters and math concepts.

·         If you were the author what verbs would you use to describe how the character was feeling?

Teaching and Thinking with Intention

"Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." Luke 12:34

Once again, Houston and Sokolow's Principles of Learning has allowed me to think deeper. This principle is the base of which all decisions are made from. Within the first page they grabbed my attention with this quote, "The more your underlying intention focuses on benefiting others, the more you will engender support from the Universe." After reading this article, I will strive to teach and live with intention. The short video, "Cypher in the Snow," screamed how important it is to show and explain your intentions to your students. The little boy moved through school without being noticed. It is so important to find a connection with each student in class. Every child needs to feel like they belong to their classroom community. It is my job as the leader of the room to make sure that happens.

This is how I plan to Teach with Intention
  • Lesson Planning
    • lessons that build on each other
    • lessons that grasp the attention and love of my students
    • lessons that get to the essential question of what I want my students to learn/know
  • Relationships with my students
    • build a connection with each student
    • express true interest in them as a person and a learner
    • give them the tools to grow academically and socially
  • School Community
    • share ideas and strategies that work
    • move from a level 3 leader to a level 4 lead
    • give time and intention to committees and organization
  • Make sure my underlying intention focuses on others and not myself.
How do you teach with intention?

Time Savers

I would like to start with showing you a few of my favorite time savers! Please share yours too!

  • Art Project Hangers - This idea came from a kindergarten teacher. They are great for two reasons! One, I know who is finished with their project, since they hang them on their names. Two, I don't have to spend that extra time with the tape dispenser!
  • Game - Secret Scrap - Do you ever catch yourself cleaning up your floors when the kids leave? When our classroom gets messy, we play the game, Secret Scrap! I walk around the room to find the perfect scrap. My excited and ambitious students try to find the secret scrap. The lucky winner receives a prize.
  • Locker Displays- At the beginning of the year, I cut off the 3-ring binder side of clear slips. I tape them to the lockers with a piece of card stock inside. Throughout the year, my kids put their inside the clear slips. Sharing a writing display = no time :-) !
